West Suffolk Hospital
As a courtyard infill project, the Critical Decision Unit provides a new reception, interview room, recliner bays, two 3 bed bays and associated facilities. The existing wall finish within the courtyard is render to which the proposals have been carefully designed to provide matching render panels. A new flat roof with rooflight brings daylight into the new rooms from above. The form is simple in design, blends in with the existing building and is a practical use of space to maximize the service provided. The interior is designed to be calming with a crisp, fresh feel.
A digital wall image in the recliner bay is printed on a PVC hygienic wall cladding sheet which is durable and easy to clean. The image itself is of the herb, Dill, which has medicinal and healing properties so is significant to the use of the unit. The image was also simplified and used on the glazed screens to give some privacy but to allow full vision from nurse to patients. The splashes of lime green bring a cheerful yet natural highlight to the other neutral colours used.
