Newmarket Community Diagnostic Centre officially opens thanks to KLH

VIP guests joined representatives from KLH Architects and West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at the unveiling of a state-of-the-art Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Newmarket.

We are proud to have designed the £7.8m CDC at Newmarket Community Hospital, enhancing diagnostic services for residents in the region while reducing waiting times and the speed of referral to treatment.

The formal opening ceremony, with guests including local MP Nick Timothy, comes after the centre opened its doors to patients in December 2024. And it’s already had a huge impact. In its first eight weeks alone the centre conducted more than 3,500 tests and scans for 2,800 patients – while the number of patients waiting for a CT scan halved from November 2024 to April 2025.

The centre was designed to maximise its impact in relieving pressure on the NHS while transforming access for patients to a wide range of tests. This includes MRI, CT and X-ray rooms, as well as cardiology diagnostics and recovery bays alongside facilities for staff.

Sustainability has been at the core of this project – with almost half of its energy being powered by renewable sources, including more than 120 solar panels.

Construction was delivered by Morgan Sindall using a sustainable approach to traditional construction to deliver the bespoke nature of the centre’s more intricate scanning bays.

The resulting method ensured cost, time and carbon targets were met – combining elements of pre-manufactured systems with traditional methods for a timely, high-quality and successful hybrid approach.

Our Director Stuart Edgar, who led on the project, said: “It was greatly fulfilling to have played our part in such a transformative project for the people of Newmarket and the surrounding area, having previously worked with West Suffolk Hospital at their site in Bury St. Edmunds

“The new CDC has been delivered using a uniquely hybrid approach that has not only cut carbon but ensured this much-needed community facility was completed on-time and on-budget.

“It has been great to hear how much of an impact the CDC is already having – and we look forward to working closely with the NHS on new projects in the future.”
